Parent material (P) in soils is the matrix that the soil is modified from. Common parent materials would include river deposits, rock, ash, desert sand, or decaying organic matter. This parent material is then modified over time to become a new entity – a soil that is significantly different from the parent material from which it originated.
In personal history, parent material includes:
•Family, ancestors, ancestral homelands
•Family “values”
•Genetic advantages and disadvantages
My deepest thanks to the artists who are willing to share their work. Thanks!
Projects that help people to explore their parent material include personal reference slides, ancestry maps, and family life slices. Be sure to visit the Personal Reference Slides page for more images (link in the top menu).
